Face-Fit Testing is a method whereby tight-fitting masks are tested to ensure they are adequate for the user’s face.
There are two methods in which face fit testing can be completed; these include qualitative and quantitative testing.
Facial fit testing is crucial to help prevent users being exposed to harmful chemicals and substances.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations require that employers ensure their employees are adequately protected, including proper fit testing for tight-fitting respirators.
It is recommended that testing occurs annually, and if the mask changes, then additional testing should occur.
The test involves the user placing on the respirator and adjusting it until it is fitted correctly and performing a series of exercises (e.g., head movements, talking) while the test equipment assesses the fit.
Qualitative Fit Testing
The user will be assessed on the fit of their mask via the use of their senses. If they can smell or task the solution then the seal is not adequate.
Quantitative Fit Testing
Uses a machine to measure the amount of leakage into the respirator.
